Sermons
Sermons are not written to be read on the page, but heard in the preacher's voice as part of a church service. They are also written for particular listeners at a particular place and time. For these reasons, it is a little absurd to offer a collection of sermon transcripts, divorced from the contexts that gave rise to them. Having said that, readers may find a few valuable ideas and images in these transcripts, and it is in that hope that I share them here.
A little while ago a friend of mine said something to me that I can’t get out of my mind. It’s one of those things someone says that to them seems obvious and uncontroversial, but it brings me up short. I just can’t shake it. Here’s what he said:
“You don’t take your dirty laundry to church.”
What does he mean by dirty laundry?
